Over the course of time and several adjustment sessions Dr. Carlos A. Tamayo has gradually realigned your teeth for a more appealing smile and a more functional mouth. Even after your teeth have reached their ideal alignment you will still need to wear a retainer to make sure your teeth stay in their ideal alignment for years to come.
Once Dr. Carlos A. Tamayo removes your braces, there will still be a little residual tension in the periodontal ligaments anchoring your teeth in their sockets. Without a retainer, this residual tension will slowly start to pull your teeth out of alignment again.
Wearing a retainer helps to hold your teeth in their new alignment while the periodontal ligaments gradually adapt to their new position. Dr. Carlos A. Tamayo will usually fit your for a retainer immediately after your braces are removed.
Generally, most people need to use a retainer for about as long as they had braces. If you don’t wear your retainer during the prescribed times, or it is damaged, it might increase the amount of time you need to use it.
Hawley retainers are the most common type of retainer that Dr. Carlos A. Tamayo recommends. This is a thin acrylic piece molded to the shape of the roof of your mouth and attaches to your teeth with wires.
When you first start wearing a retainer, your mouth might produce more saliva for a few days. This is natural and after a while your mouth will adapt and things will return to normal. You should expect to wear your retainer for about as long as you were wearing braces.
